South Hill Wood and Kingswood Glen
South Hill Wood is some 2.5 hectares. It contains remnants of ancient woodland, and has an interesting history. Flora and fauna surveys have identified 4 species of butterfly; 3 of bats; 26 of bird; 29 of trees; and 81 of various flora. In Spring, bluebell areas come to life. Information panels describe history, flora, and fauna. There is a strong Friends Group, with impressive improvement programmes. New planting encourages wildlife - especially butterflies and birds. Kingswood Glen has ancient woodland, origins as an Iron Age hill-fort, and Roman connections. The ponds are home to crested newts, mallards, and coots - and the largest was desilted in 2013, resulting in a much improved wildlife habitat. The Glen is now listed as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation. Click here for further information.
