Bromley Countryside Volunteers
Welcome to the Bromley Countryside Volunteers. This unique team has been running since 1989 and undertakes practical tasks on Wednesdays and Thursdays most weeks of the year. Its team of dedicated volunteers work in all weathers for the good of Bromley’s wildlife and countryside, conserving and enhancing the borough’s natural environment. By managing various borough wide sites the team helps to fulfil the aims and objectives of the Bromley Biodiversity Action Plan (BBAP).
The team’s tasks are coordinated and generally led by council countryside staff. The borough council is responsible for 200 hectares of land with special scientific interest (SSSI) and five local nature reserves and Bromley contains the largest area of Green Belt countryside out of all the London boroughs. The more urban areas of the borough provide a wealth of wildlife habitats as well, many of which are designated as Sites of Importance to Conservation (SINCs).
Conservation work is very varied and what you will be doing depends on the time of the year, weather conditions and the type of site. Common tasks include cutting, raking and scrub clearing to manage grassland or heathland habitats; clearing overhanging vegetation from footpaths and access ways; repairing or installing footpaths and countryside furniture; erecting chestnut post and rail fencing and tree planting, coppicing and hedgelaying.
If you are interested, work days start at 10am and we normally work on site until around 3pm with a lunch break about 12.30pm. No previous experience is necessary. You will be shown how to approach conservation work appropriately and safely, and by attending regularly you will build up a wide range of practical skills. All tools and protective equipment are provided and you will be advised on how to use them. Everyone works at his or her own pace so you will not be expected to overwork yourself. You can take additional breaks when you need to and if you wish to leave the work site early just let the task leader know.
You will however need to wear comfortable outdoor clothing including waterproofs. Wear layers as you will get warm whilst you work. Sturdy footwear with good grip and ankle support is a must and should be steel toe-capped if possible.
You should also bring with you a packed lunch or snack and a drink.
