Darrick and Newstead Woods
Darrick and Newstead Woods was probably part of the 200 hectare estate attached to the Crofton Roman Villa (by Orpington Station) and it has been managed by man ever since. Look for some of the many plants and animals which live in this historic landscape. Some are indicated by posts numbered and banded in green. Others may be difficult to spot but are indicated on the Nature Trail leaflet. More recently the area has been designated as a Local Nature Reserve (LNR).
The Friends of Darrick and Newstead Woods objective is to secure and promote conservation and biodiversity in the 25 hectares of ancient woodland and meadow which make up the Darrick and Newstead Woods Local Nature Reserve. This area lies behind the many schools in the Lovibonds and Tubbenden areas, the Bromley Tennis Centre and Broadwater Gardens.

- We are keen to make people more aware of the area and to encourage its use as an area of informal enjoyment for families, dog walkers and ramblers. The London Loop path crosses through our area.
- Currently we are designing information and viewpoint boards and a new signpost to help people find their way around.
- We meet regularly on Thursday mornings to do conservation work such as keeping the paths accessible, maintaining fencing, coppicing and dead hedging. During the summer we do Butterfly and Wildflower surveys.
- Money raised will go towards new projects for path improvements, to increase accessibility for less able visitors, improve access signs and repair and regenerate hedging along historic natural boundaries.
- The Friends of Darrick and Newstead Woods have recently received an award from the peoples for Parks scheme. The award recognises the work the Friends have carried out to improve and maintain the park, and provides £200 to be put towards any future projects.
