South Hill Wood and Kingswood Glen
South Hill Wood is some 2.5 hectares. It contains remnants of ancient woodland, and has an interesting history. Flora and fauna surveys have identified 4 species of butterfly; 3 of bats; 26 of bird; 29 of trees; and 81 of various flora. In Spring, bluebell areas come to life. Information panels describe history, flora, and fauna. There is a strong Friends Group, with impressive improvement programmes. New planting encourages wildlife - especially butterflies and birds. Click here for further information.
Kingswood Glen has ancient woodland, origins as an Iron Age hill-fort, and Roman connections. The ponds are home to crested newts, mallards, and coots - and the largest was desilted in 2013, resulting in a much improved wildlife habitat. The Glen is now listed as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation. Click here for further information.
The Friends were formed in 2009 to reclaim South Hill Wood from anti-social behaviour, following police advice at the Shortlands Safer Neighbourhood Panel. The Wood was neglected, unmanaged, overrun with invasive laurel overhanging pathways, gloomy and threatening. The Wood is now much used due to improvements instigated by the Friends, in partnership with the London Borough of Bromley and its main park contractors. In 2019 the Friends, together with its partners, completed the restoration of the 1902 Fountain. Click here for further information.
The Friends have work sessions on the second Saturday of each month [meeting by the Clubhouse at 10.30am], and receive Newsletters with information on projects, history, flora and fauna, etc. Membership is without charge, and application is at a meeting, or to our Honorary Secretary via the contact form below.
Both the Wood and the Glen are registered Local Green Spaces - on the principal basis of being “of special character and locally valued”. We have been awarded several Green Flags - which is an important National “Quality Mark”.
